Going to war. by kaasjager
Going to war.
13 October 2016- Havelte, Netherlands.

Alpha Coy, 44th Mech inf. battalion, 43th Mechanised brigade, 4th Infantry (Mech) division stands on the base parade ground before shipping out to the middle east. Since the successes of ISIS in late 2015 and early 2016, taking most of Syria and parts or Iraq the international community started preparing to intervene against ISIS. One month ago ISIS started to attack Jordan, while it's army is standing ground, the Jordanians asked for help. The Dutch were amongst the first to respond to this, already having Air mobile and Marine units in Jordan. But to push ISIS out, heavier units are needed. Netherlands will send it's 4th Infanty (mech) division and they are now starting to ship out.
The above company and those like it in the division are the core of it's combat power, together with the division tanks and air support. A Mech inf. company consist out of 4 platoons and a headquarters section. From left to right, headquarters section with attached reconnaissance section, 3 platoons with Infantry fighting vehicles and 1 heavy weapons platoon with a battery of 120mm mortars.

Just before this picture was taken, the 177 soldiers said goodbye to their beloved ones.
We wish the fighting men and women godspeed and success on their mission.

This design has several versions, depending on the interior and electronic systems. the basic APC, a Command version with more radio's and combat management systems and a Recce version with extra sensors. In the middle is the IFV design armed with a high rate of fire 40mm Bofors canon and a RWS system, shown with a M2 .50 HMG, it carries 8 dismounts. On the right is the mortar vehicle, armed with a 120mm mortar, aimed by a automated ballistic computer, making it one of the most accurate systems in it's class. The mortar design also carries a RWS system, shown with a 40mm automatic grenade launcher.

More variants of the Wildebeast are under development, including a heavy infantry support vehicle with a 57mm cannon and missiles, a 120mm high powered cannon version and a air defence version.

Wildebeast Mk.1 IFV beautyshot. by kaasjager
Wildebeast Mk.1 IFV beautyshot.
The Hague 2015-02-05.
Via Hanes Defence Press.

The Royal Netherlands Army has unvieled it's new tracked fighting vehicle design.

The Wildebeast Mk.1 Infantry Fighting vehicle was designed to replace the ageing Buffalo tracked combat vehicle series. The Wildebeast Mk.1 IFV is the first design of this family. This vehicle is lower and smaller than the huge Buffalo. The Buffalo was found to be too large for it's role, often getting stuck in narrow streets and too underpowered to climb steep inclines.
The Wildebeast, despite being smaller and lighter than the Buffalo is better protected. This is done with new ceramic/steel sandwich materials, the base vehicle is armoured against 20mm cannon fire in the frontal arc, 12.5 HMG fire from the sides and back. With the bolt on armour added, the vehicle can take 40mm fire in the frontal arc and 20mm fire from the sides and back. The vehicles has a V shaped hull to deal with IEDs and mines much better than the old Buffalo.

The Wildebeast is powered by a hybrid Diesel electric drive system, this gives a much more economic powerplant which is also stronger and faster than the Buffalo.

It is equipped with state of the art optical sensor systems, with day/night camera's, IR camera's, the commander and the gunner both have a separate sight, the commanders sights are linked to the RWS system. This remote weapon system gives the commander the ability to engage separate targets.
The teeth of the Wildebeast consist of a 40mm Bofors cannon with a high rate of fire and on the commanders RWS station there is a modular mount to add anything from a 7.62mm GPMG to a 40mm grenade launcher. In this picture a M2 .50HMG is fitted.

The Wildebeast Mk.1 has a crew of 3 (commander, gunner and driver) and takes up to 7 dismounts, all seated in shock absorbent seats.

The Royal Netherlands army is set to replace all the Buffalo's in it's 2 armoured, 1 mechanised division over the course of 10-15 years, starting with the IFV role and later taking over all the roles the Buffalo had. The Dutch Marine Corps and foreign customers have also shown interest in the design.
